Royal honor for VU theologian Samuel Lee
Samuel Lee has been appointed Knight of the Order of Oranje-Nassau for his contribution to migrant welfare in the Netherlands.

On Sunday 13 September 2020, Samuel Lee, also Dutch Theologian Laureate of 2019, was presented with the award by Amsterdam Deputy Mayor Marjolein Moorman at the De Kandelaar building where fifteen migrant churches are located.
About Samuel Lee
Lee came to the Netherlands at the age of fourteen and studied Sociology in Leiden. In 2013 he obtained his doctorate in Philosophy from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU). Lee is director of the Center for Theology of Migration located at the VU and is also founder of the Stichting Academie van Amsterdam, which gives migrants an opportunity to receive education at an academic level.
Since 1994 he has been a pastor of the Jesus Christ Foundation Church in Amsterdam South-East, where many migrants come. At the end of 2019, Lee was elected Dutch Theologian Laureate. It is the first time that a theologian with a migration background fulfills this role.
